May Update - Month's progress and new release window on 2024
11 months ago – Wed, May 31, 2023 at 09:28:22 AM

Release window

I’d like to start this update by going straight to the point: Elementallis will be released in 2024 and we are aiming towards Q1, but we’ll confirm as soon as we approach the date.

Let me tell you about everything that made us make this decision.

Our initial goal was to aim towards Q3 2023, Q4 was discarded because due to other major releases during this period, it would make our launch pretty difficult. After 5 years working on Elementallis, I want to give it the biggest chance at launch to ensure that we can keep working on more following games.

This goal was very difficult to achieve and it meant that we would have needed to finish development in June/July to have time to work on the ports, translations and QA. This also made running our beta with you very difficult.

On top of that, we noticed that our biomes have become considerably big, and when adding a new biome, the amount of testing required and the complexity added made me progress at a slower pace than before. I tried to compensate by dedicating more hours each week, but I’ve reached a point where this is not sustainable in the long run (I haven’t had a full free day in weeks).

We want to take the time needed to ensure the quality of our game and make sure that it is fun and engaging and also works perfectly well on all platforms. To do that, we have to push the release a few months further.

I know this is disappointing, and I’m eager to release Elementallis as soon as possible. It is something made with love, the project of my life and I can’t wait to finally have it complete and share it with you all.

As I’m writing this, I’m nervous about how you’ll receive this news, but I can only thank you for being there with us in our journey.

I’ll keep posting monthly updates to update you all on the development as usual. I’m also available on this comment section or on Discord, so let me know your thoughts and reach out as you like^^

Thank you all, elementalists!

Month’s progress

This month we’ve been working on Cales, the water biome, and we found out an issue (this is one of the reasons I noticed we couldn’t meet our deadlines). Turns out the way I was making the water (with the shader, collisions, reflections, etc) wasn’t optimized enough for a large scene. It was ok for other biomes since they don’t have that much water, but here we needed to come up with a better solution.

After optimizing the water (it now uses a “big object of water” instead of individual "16x16 objects"), we changed a bit the system we had that activates objects based on their distance to the player. This system allowed objects far away to deactivate since they don’t need to be active as the camera doesn’t render them. Instead of this system, we are now using a grid system that activates objects on sections near the player. This reduced dramatically the calls to “activate/deactivate” object that we had, and along with the optimizations to the water, made everything perform much better.

Also, we have worked on the cutscenes and environments of the biome. Here are a couple sneak peek screenshots:

It seems like in Cales town everyone is inside their home to avoid the rain!

About to enter the Water Temple

Thanks again and see you all next month!

March Update - New demo featuring Rogentia!
about 1 year ago – Thu, Mar 23, 2023 at 06:56:10 AM

Hello everyone! 👋

This month's update is coming a bit earlier and it is public, because we want to announce that we updated our demo! 🥳

In this new demo, you will be able to explore most of Rogentia, the volcano biome 🔥 Meet the dwarfs and return the lava to their village, get through the mines while facing new fire type enemies and obtain items and upgrades along the way! The demo is set a bit after the tutorial in the game and the beginning of your journey, since we didn't want to make it super long. It's an almost full biome with its town, area and temple.

It's a significantly longer demo than the previous one, and there is optional content in NPC interactions and secrets and areas. We recommend that you explore as much as you want and we'll see if you are able to complete everything :D

The demo features the bestiary with the fire type enemies and some journal pages from your parents scattered around (they will give you context about what did your parents do...).

Some features of the demo:

  • Compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux
  • 16:9 and 16:10 aspect ratios supported
  • Localized to English, Spanish, Catalan and German
  • Keyboard and gamepad controller support

Remember that Elementallis is still in development: bugs may arise, we might need to rebalance stuff and things might change in the final release. This is why we can't wait to hear your feedback (join our Discord so we can talk about it!).

Between the demo and the future beta for you, the backers, we expect to tune everything as best as possible. We are now adding content in pursue of the alpha build and we'll let you know as soon as we approach the beta build.

We hope you enjoy this new demo. Thanks everyone and see you next month!
